Diploma in Syriac Language and Liturgy

The Diploma in Syriac Language and Liturgy (DSL) is awarded to students who successfully complete all three levels of the Syriac language program together with the designated liturgical courses, for a total of 60 credits. The program is currently offered exclusively on campus for seminarians preparing for priestly or monastic vocations. Students pursue the Diploma concurrently with the Bachelor of Theology program.

Curriculum and Study Format

The DSL curriculum covers the complete series of Adab al-Masih Qarabashi at the beginner and intermediate levels, along with selected writings of major Syriac Church Fathers at the advanced level. These include Aphrahat, Moses Bar Kepho, Mor Aphrem the Syriac, Mor Jacob of Serugh, John of Dara, Mor Philoxenus of Mabbug, Mor Severus of Antioch, Isaac of Antioch, Isaac of Nineveh, and Bar Hebraeus.

Grammar courses provide comprehensive instruction from introductory through advanced levels. The program also includes practical training in liturgical services (Qurobo, Shhimo, and Phenqitho), Syriac church music (Beth Gazo), and Teleturgics.

Syriac language and grammar courses, as well as liturgical services, are conducted in Classical Syriac.
